The Stonebow is situated on the site of the southern gateway to the Roman town of Lindum Colonia (now the City of Lincoln) and a gateway has stood here for over 1800 years, although the present building was not completed until 1520.
The Guildhall is the "official home" of the Mayor and occupies the whole of the second floor of the Stonebow. Access to this historical building is via the large double oak doors in the East Wing of the building on Saltergate and is of 15th and 16th century. The City's administration have met in the Council Chamber for many centuries from the medieval Gild Merchant to its modern day descendant of the City Council.
Within the Guildhall is the old debtors prison which now houses the City's Civic Insignia including the Royal Sword presented by Richard II and the Mayor's Mace presented by Charles II. Several chains of office can be seen as well as the unique Mayor's posy ring which is only worn on two occasions: when being married to the City at the Annual Meeting and on the Mayor's "official" birthday a custom dating back to 1852.
The chains of office are on display and five of the six are still worn today. The Mayor’s old chain dates back to1849 but was taken out of use in 1960. The Sheriff’s chain dates back to 1887 and is still worn today.

Many charters have been granted over the years and the oldest of 1157 through to the latest in 1974 by HM Queen Elizabeth II being on display.
Other items including racing cups, Caps of Maintenance, Mayor's Staff of Office, Royal Swords and Mace, items relating to the City links, banqueting plate and much more can be seen.
The Guildhall is still used today for Council meetings, receptions hosted by the Mayor and for guided tours. If you wish to visit, contact the Civic Office for opening times.
The Guildhall is an historic building and accessibility for some people may not be practicable. There are three steps which need to be climbed to gain entry through the main door and view the Civic Insignia. To view the Council Chamber on the upper floor two flights of steps need to be climbed, however there is a stair lift available to access the upper floor.
It must also be borne in mind that some of the floor areas are a little uneven and there a few additional steps to be careful of when walking about the building. The staff on duty also have the right to refuse entry in connection with our duty care to members of public. This information is given to ensure that you have an enjoyable visit to the Guildhall.
