Bins and Waste FAQ

Green Collection Payments

What is the cost of the garden waste service?

The cost for the service is £39 per year for your first bin. This covers the year from July 1st to June 30th the following year.

Additional bins are charged at £15 per year with a maximum of four bins per property. New bins are supplied for an initial delivery charge of £15 per bin.

Why has the cost of the service risen?

There has been a small increase over the years as the council continues to subsidise the service and, at a time of continued austerity, needs to try and reach a point of full cost recovery for the service. The Council has frozen the cost during this time of austerity but may need to review this decision in the future.

The income from charges reduces the net cost of the service and enables the council to keep on providing it. The annual charge ensures that only those residents that use the service pay for it. The annual charge represents good value for money for the collection of your garden waste on a year-round, fortnightly basis.

How do I pay to keep my green waste collection?

You will find it easy to join and pay for your garden waste collections online at the page directory below.

Are there any concessions to the fee?

As the charge goes towards the collection costs there are no concessionary rates.

If I opt-in part of the way through a year, why isn't it cheaper?

The service is subsidised, so you aren’t paying the full cost of the service. The scheme operates the simplest system possible so as to keep administration costs down for all.

If I don't make a payment by the time of collection, is there some opportunity for me to get a collection and pay ready for next time?

We ask for payment before collection. You can choose to opt into the scheme at any time. The council’s scheme runs from 1st July to 30th June at a fixed price, so when buying into the scheme you will need to choose the operating year you wish the service to cover. The earlier you opt in, the better the value you get from it.

If I live at a property that has problems taking wheeled bins, for example it has steps up to it, can I still opt-in for the service?

Not necessarily. For some properties use of wheeled bins isn’t a realistic proposition. This is more commonly due to steps or very steep slopes which make their use impractical. In such cases we will make a visit and take an objective view as to how safe it would be for you, and the collection operatives. We will try to get you on the service if we can, but in some instances, we may have to refuse on safety grounds.

I work as part of an organisation that could use the green bin service, but isn't a domestic property? Can we buy the service?

The service operated is for domestic customers only, and not for commercial businesses. However, there are some categories of premises that may be eligible for the service, such as schools and churches. We will assess such requests individually and help if we can.

Please contact us if you work for any of these kinds of organisation, and can: identify someone who will be a named person responsible for the service; make the required payment; present the bin at the kerbside for 6:30am; and provide safe storage.
