Previous Refurbishment Updates
Second Chapel opens at Lincoln Crematorium as part of wider refurbishment works
The first phase of City of Lincoln Council’s Lincoln Crematorium refurbishment is now complete, with the second chapel now open.
Works to refurbish Lincoln Crematorium began in April 2021, and have so far seen a second chapel built, which will be used to carry out services during the construction works, as well as after the works are completed to enable more services to be offered.
Alongside the second chapel, when the refurbishment is complete, it will include:
- An upgrade to the back of house areas of the main Crematorium building, including the crematory and committal areas, and the inclusion of two new cremators
- New car parking
Maria Clayton, Capital Projects Manager for Major Developments at City of Lincoln Council said:
“We are pleased to announce the first phase of works at Lincoln Crematorium are now complete, with the second chapel now open for funeral services.”
Contractors Lindum will now commence building works inside the main chapel to enable the installation of the new cremators and associated plant to be installed.
Construction of a new 85 space car park on the existing overspill car park are also progressing well and are due to be complete by Autumn 2021.
David Chambers, Lindum Group chairman said:
“Handover of this new second chapel will pave the way for us to start work on the upgrade of the existing facilities, which involves making modifications to accommodate two new cremators as well as improvements to public and staff areas.
“To ensure we didn’t disturb the funeral services taking place over the last few months, we altered our traditional shift patterns. We had operatives coming on shift in the afternoon once all the services were over and they would be on site until around 9pm. This allowed us to carry out any noisy activities in the most sensitive way possible.
“We will continue with this during the next phase of works, which is expected to take until October.”
Cllr Bob Bushell Portfolio Holder for Remarkable Place at City of Lincoln Council added:
“These works are important to ensure we can continue to deliver a high-quality service, in an attractive environment where people can say goodbye to their loved ones.
‘’The second chapel is a great addition to the site and I am pleased to see these works progressing.”
The construction works are taking place from 4pm to 10pm Monday to Thursday and all-day Friday, Saturday and Sunday which will significantly minimise disruption to normal services.

What is happening at the crematorium?
The Lincoln Crematorium is undergoing some refurbishment works, both internally and externally during 2021 and these works started on the 19th April with an anticipated completion by October 2021. The works include:
• An upgrade of the internal spaces including the crematory and committal areas
• New car parking, to be delivered in two phases, to provide an additional 85 car parking spaces
• A second chapel which will be used to carry out services during the construction works as well as after the works are complete to enable more services to be offered
Our contractors, Lindum Construction who will be carrying out the work, will ensure any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum to enable services to continue during the construction phase. The majority of the work will be completed outside of usual working hours from 4pm to late evening Monday to Thursday and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, including overnight working.
Please be assured that Lindum Construction have experience working in very specialised and sensitive environments and every effort is being made to keep disturbance and noise to an absolute minimum and to maintain this very special place whilst we continue to provide a service to families.
If you would like to come and visit the second chapel in advance of booking your service at the crematorium, please contact the Crematorium team on 01522 873646 who will be happy to make arrangement for you to visit.
Is the site running as usual?
As stated above the Crematorium operating hours will remain largely unchanged and the available service times will be communicated well in advance to funeral directors. Access to the garden of remembrance will be maintained throughout the work.
Our office opening hours and the grounds opening hours will remain the same. Which are:
• Monday – Tuesday: 8:30am to 5pm
• Friday: 8:30am to 4:30pm
If you have any queries about this, please do not hesitate to ring the crematorium on 01522 873646.
Will there be lorries and machinery visible?
The builders are working within their own compound and all deliveries, storage of materials and machinery are kept within this area. A traffic management plan will be in place during the works to ensure that business disruption is kept to a minimum and services can continue to be conducted. The builders have a representative located at the entrance to the crematorium to ensure construction traffic is escorted as quickly as possible to their compound.
Will there be construction noise during my service?
As most of the work will be completed outside of the Crematorium operating hours, we expect that there will be minimal noise and disruption. The Second Chapel is a robust semi-permanent construction which is acoustically insulated with sound proofing which will eliminate noise from any work being carried out. However, changing circumstances can affect noise levels, such as wind direction. If the noise level does pose a nuisance, please advise the Crematorium management team, who will ensure the matter is dealt with as soon as is practical.
What about car parking facilities?
We are maintaining car-parking provision throughout the works. All car-parking areas will be well marked as part of the traffic management plan that we have in place. We do recommend that if you have a large number of people planning to attend the service that you book a double time slot in the chapel, in order to allow time for those attending the service to access parking provision easily. We also recommend that you make the Crematorium Team aware if you are expecting a large attendance in order that crematorium staff can assist with traffic management.
If you do have any queries, or would like to look around, please feel free to ring the bereavement services team on 01522 873 646.
Finally, we would like to thank you for your understanding and patience whilst we carry out these important works.
