New Lincoln street named in memory of Rookery Lane family

'Ward' sisters and Cllr Nannestad stood with road sign

City of Lincoln Council alongside representatives of Willmott Dixon joined a Lincoln family in celebrating the naming of a new street in the city.

Ward Paddock, which forms part of the new Rookery Lane development in Moorland ward, has officially been named in memory of the Ward family, who have lived in the area for over 60 years.

The Ward family, which celebrated the officially naming ceremony on 6 June, lived in one of the houses on Rookery Lane, which was demolished to create the new access road for the new development site.

On behalf of the family, Diane Rawson (nee Ward), daughter of Ronald and Dorothy Ward, requested the road was named after them in recognition of their contribution to Lincoln.

Ronald and Dorothy were both born in and grew up in the city, married and had three children in Lincoln, who all attended local schools, and continue to live nearby.

Ronald was a self-employed master joiner, who regularly worked in schools to repair equipment, door locks and flooring and was also an active member in the RAF during World War Two, working on the Sunderland flying boat patrol bombers.

Dorothy trained as a nurse and worked in the city as a midwife and health visitor for Lincolnshire County Council and worked for over 40 years in the public sector serving the community, alongside working with her local Moorland Park Methodist church.

Sadly, Ronald passed away some years ago, however Dorothy remains in the city in a local residential home, which she moved to after living at her Rookery Lane home for over 60 years.

Diane Rawson (nee Ward), who attending the official naming ceremony alongside her sisters Amanda and Elaine, said: “It’s a real joy and privilege to see that Ward Paddock is being named in honour of our parents Ron and Dorothy Ward.

“They brought up three daughters here, have grandchildren and great grandchildren all still living locally. Dorothy amazingly turns 98 this month, so this is a lovely birthday bonus!

“Ward Paddock is a touching way for the Ward name to live on in recognition of the contribution our parents made to this area. My sisters and I want to thank City of Lincoln Council and Wilmott Dixon for blessing us with this delightful memory.”

Cllr Donald Nannestad, Portfolio Holder for Quality Housing at City of Lincoln Council added: “It is clear this family has been significantly involved with the City of Lincoln over the years and we are honoured to name this road after them to recognise this contribution.

“When complete, the new Rookery Lane site will deliver 42 new council homes for the area, which will include 32 two – four bed housings, four two-bedroom bungalows and six one-bedroom flats.

“We look forward to opening these homes to future families, who we hope will continue to contribute to the city, as the Ward family has."
