City of Lincoln Council has announced its purchase of a new, modern hotel building currently under construction on Tentercroft Street in the city.

The building is due to be completed later this year when the council will lease it to Travelodge Hotels Limited for 25 years. The hotel chain will also have the option to extend the lease for a further 25 years.

City of Lincoln Council will invest £13million in the project and returns will be used to maintain key council services.

The new hotel, which is being developed by York-based S Harrison, will consist of 127 bedrooms, breaking down into 60 double bedrooms, 61 family rooms and six accessible rooms. Of these, 28 will be ‘super rooms’ which are designed with business customers in mind and contain desk, multiple USB and charging points across the room. The hotel will also benefit from 22 dedicated car parking spaces.

The building will mainly be constructed from red and buff brickwork with recessed grey aluminium window frames. The main entrance will lead to the reception, breakfast area, café, bar and seating area, and there will also be a kitchen and storage rooms on the ground floor.

Councillor Ric Metcalfe, Leader of City of Lincoln Council, said: “People are looking to Lincoln more and more as a tourist destination and having a Travelodge in the heart of the city will help meet the demand of budget-conscious visitors.

“The superb location of the hotel will provide easy links to the new transport hub, the High Street and the University of Lincoln, making it an ideal place to stay for a trip to the city.

“The public has recently voted the city as having some of the best attractions in the country so this is a very exciting time for Lincoln. The new hotel will provide much needed jobs in the city to drive economic growth.

“This development captures our vision to deliver Lincoln’s ambitious future and such a substantial investment, albeit with considerable rewards, gives out a clear message that the council is doing all it can to help enhance our remarkable city.

“This is a calculated investment which required a carefully considered business case. We are confident it will reap good rewards for council tax payers in an environment where financial support from central government is disappearing.”

David Clancy, Development director from S Harrison, remarked: “This year-long transformation into a much-needed new hotel in the heart of Lincoln has created jobs and helped boost the local economy.

“It will also no doubt assist with attracting more visitors to this central area, which has benefited from major investment recently, and we are proud to have played our part in helping bring Travelodge to the city.”

Tony O’Brien, UK Development Director for Travelodge Hotels, said: “The new Travelodge Lincoln City Centre is in a perfect location for business and leisure visitors to the city. Being easy to find and access, having excellent car parking adjacent to the hotel and being directly opposite the railway station, the new Travelodge is ideal for customers driving to Lincoln or arriving on the train.”
