One month to go until the start of Lincoln Christmas Market 2017

This year's Lincoln Christmas Market is now only one month away and final preparations are taking place.

The event has plenty to live up to after last year’s bumper crowds which saw more than 260,000 turn out to experience the country’s first traditional German-style Christmas market.

Now in its 35th year, the market is set against the stunning backdrop of the city’s historic Cathedral quarter, offering visitors an enchanting and atmospheric day out.
The festive wonderland hosts more than 200 stalls selling everything from unique handmade gifts to traditional gleuhwein.

For many in the city, the Christmas Market is the most important event in Lincoln’s calendar as it brings so many people to the city. These visitors often return at other times in the year when they realise all the city has to offer.

This year’s event is already a ‘sell-out’ with all stalls now being taken. Also, the market will benefit from additional security.
Simon Colburn, one of Lincoln Christmas Market’s event commanders, said:

“Lincoln Christmas Market has built a reputation over its thirty-five year history of being a safe and enjoyable family event and we intend to keep it that way.

“To ensure this happens, we will be strengthening security at the event by having additional armed police and an increase in traffic security measures.

“We will make sure that any added security does not impact on visitors and hopefully it will enhance their enjoyment, knowing they are safe and secure while at the country’s finest Christmas market.

“That said, as with any event, people should remain vigilant at all times while enjoying this amazing and unique experience.”

Chief Inspector Stewart Brinn of Lincolnshire Police, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming Christmas Market regulars back to Lincoln this year as well as people who will be coming for the first time to enjoy the event.

“Anyone who has been before will know that there are always a number of police officers around who are on hand to offer advice and also report to should people need any assistance, and this year there have also been some other security measures such as blocking off roads at key locations.

“This is something many local authorities are doing across the country as part of the preparation and planning processes for Christmas markets and we’re no different here in Lincoln. I’d like to emphasise that the installation of these measures is not based on any emerging threat or intelligence.

“We will have officers at the market, some of whom will be armed as they often are at events as large as this one, and they are there for you. Please talk to them, ask them for advice, and please tell them if you have any concerns or see anything suspicious.

“The most important thing is that the market is a safe and enjoyable event for all, as it is every year, and we have been working with City of Lincoln Council and other agencies to ensure that’s the case again this year.”

This year’s market takes place from Thursday, December 7 to Sunday, December 10.
