This statement is from the Leader of the Council Cllr Ric Metcalfe and is supported by the Leader of the Liberal Democrat group Cllr Clare Smalley:

“It has been deeply distressing to witness the loss of life and suffering of thousands of Israeli and Palestinian men, women and children in Israel and Gaza over recent weeks.

“We can only begin to imagine the grief of families waiting for news of their family members who have been taken hostage and of the many families losing loved ones in Gaza and Israel

“The city council sends its deepest sympathy to all of those affected by the conflict, and to the many people in the city who have friends and family living in Israel or Gaza.

“Whilst the recent truce and release of hostages are welcome, we urge the UK government, along with the rest of the international community to do everything possible to bring the conflict to an end and renew efforts to bring some lasting peace to the area.

“The city council has worked hard over the years to bring different communities together in the city, and renew our commitment to fighting Antisemitism and Islamophobia and to supporting all members of our communities affected by this terrible conflict.“
