As part of City of Lincoln Council’s ongoing events programme, a new festival celebrating our historic city is set to launch in May.
Taking place 4-6 May 2024, the Lincoln Festival of History will allow visitors to enjoy a captivating journey through the ages.
This city-wide celebration of history and heritage will transport visitors and residents alike to pivotal moments in Lincoln’s past.
The festival’s first zone announcement allows visitors to step back in time to explore the Roman encampment within the Colosseum Quarter. With living history displays in St Paul in the Bail and Castle Square, come and view traditional Roman crafts and be immersed in pop up performances – including gladiator battles!
A range of historical reenactors will parade in the Uphill area of the city, with visitors encouraged to join in costume or wearing creations crafted in the various zones at the event. More details on this are to follow.
Experience thrilling historical reenactments at Lincoln Castle, engage with living history and captivating tales at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life and delve into the exciting treasures of the Lincoln Museum.
Visitors can also expect further zone announcements celebrating different time periods in the city, as well as further activity from organisations across the city, including Lincoln Cathedral.
Cllr Naomi Tweddle, Portfolio Holder for Inclusive Economic Growth at City of Lincoln Council said: “Following the success of our 2023 Events in Lincoln programme, we’re excited to start the year with something new!
“We hope Lincoln Festival of History will become a key event in the city’s yearly calendar, celebrating the city’s rich history.
“This festival will see partners from across the city including Lincoln Castle, Lincoln BIG, University of Lincoln, Lincoln Cathedral and Lincolnshire Co-op, come together to create a weekend of activity for the entire family.
“Growing year on year, this event will enable visitors to unlock the past and celebrate the legacy of Lincoln - where history comes to life.
“Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a curious explorer or simply seeking a memorable day out – this multi day experience is for you.”
Cllr Lindsey Cawrey, executive member for heritage and culture at Lincolnshire County Council, added: “Visitors already flock to the city to explore our fabulous heritage and history, but the events at the castle and our museums over this extra special Bank Holiday weekend will really bring the past to life!
“Join our time traveller as we take you on a journey through time, meeting Roman guards, Viking invaders and stylish Victorians as you find out more about Lincoln’s rich past.
“Put the date in your diary for what is set to be a fascinating an entertaining weekend for the whole city.”
Samantha Mellows, Director of Visitor Experience and Enterprise at Lincoln Cathedral said the city’s rich and diverse heritage is something that deserves to be celebrated: “Lincoln’s long history is all around us, not just in the internationally important buildings such as the cathedral, castle and our many medieval buildings, but in our impact on the country and the whole world.
“Take Lincoln Cathedral’s copy of the Magna Carta which is on display at Lincoln Castle as an example – it is a document that is not only the basis for much British law, but also for the US constitution.
“Lincoln Festival of History will bring some of those stories alive and give everyone the opportunity come together, explore the amazing history that is right on their doorstep and to find out more about this fantastic city.”
