City of Lincoln Council is proud to announce that works on a new play area for the city are now complete.

The play area, which has now been completed by contractor Wicksteed and has opened to the public, replaces the former St Giles Youth Centre.

In September 2016 the St Giles Youth Centre suffered catastrophic damage following arson.

The centre, operated by Lincolnshire County Council (LCC), was used to provide a number of services to the local community.

Following the arson, City of Lincoln Council worked with user groups to accommodate them within the nearby St Giles Community Centre on an informal basis.

Since the fire, the land has remained vacant and ownership has now been transferred from Lincolnshire County Council to the City of Lincoln Council.

Now complete, the play park, which was chosen by residents in the area and brings the total number of play areas in Lincoln to 29, includes a zip line, swings, slides and other equipment for all ages.

Cllr Bob Bushell, Portfolio Holder for Remarkable Place at City of Lincoln Council said:

“This park is a very welcome addition to the city after the loss of the much-loved youth centre.

“The fire in the area was devastating, however this play area will definitely see something positive rise from the ashes of the former centre.

“We as a council are committed to the estate and we are excited to see children and families in the area once again enjoy what this site can offer.”
