Alderman's Walk and George Glasier, a Victorian champion of the West Common by Andrew Walker
Andrew Walker is an historian with longstanding interests in Lincoln’s past. Until 2020, he was Vice Principal at Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance, and before that he worked for many years at the University of Lincoln as Head of the School of Humanities and Performing Arts.
The path running along the eastern edge of the West Common, connecting Carholme Road and Yarborough Road has an interesting history.
Named after Alderman George Glasier, its first section was formed in 1885 as part of a public works project, providing short-term employment for some of the city’s many unemployed during a deep trade depression.
During its early years, there was much controversy relating to access to it, which led to the arrest of a neighbouring property owner. George Glasier (1807-1900) lived a long and productive life.
His involvement in championing and improving the West Common, including for instance his involvement with its drainage and the open-air public baths on the common will be explored in this talk.
