Town Planning between the wars: bringing Green Space to every family - whether they want it or not.
Originally a statistician by profession, Rob Wheeler has been writing on local history and cartographic history for several decades. He is best known for Historic Town Plans of Lincoln, 1610 to 1920 produced jointly with Dennis Mills, and for Maps of the Witham Fens.
The Town Planning movement was very much about open spaces, open spaces within easy reach of people's homes and greenery and gardens in and around those homes.
After the First World War, government housing policy embraced these ideas and a number of local authorities, including Lincoln, responded with enthusiasm.
The talk is based around the massive definitive map and will describe how Town Planning facilitated all this, and the difficulties encountered.
