Town meets country, c.1914: Lincoln in the ‘Gilbert Country ‘of Lincolnshire author, Bernard Samuel Gilbert’ by Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson is Executive Dean of Research and Knowledge Exchange at BGU, and Professor of Local, Regional and Landscape History. The main focus of Andrew’s research includes twentieth-century local, regional, and landscape change in rural and urban contexts, and especially in Lincolnshire and Devon.
The Lincolnshire author, Bernard Samuel Gilbert (1882 to1927) wrote in rich and compelling detail on life in Lincoln just before the First World War. Andrew Jackson will discuss how Gilbert described the city in newspaper articles, dialect poetry, and prose.
The writer conveyed wonderful scenes at the races, the football ground, and the pleasure fair, and in the city streets, the library, and the factories. His was a country dweller's view of a provincial city - its wonders and pitfalls, its brightness and shadiness.
