The 2014 review by the National Association of British Market Authorities, commissioned by the City of Lincoln Council and partners, identified that change is necessary, recognising that Lincoln still has the potential to develop a very strong indoor and outdoor market, if it is supported by investment and improvements to the market’s appearance and access to the market hall.

The City of Lincoln Council has developed a scheme to redevelop and repurpose the Lincoln Central Market, to enable it to meet the demands of a changing high street and to provide the residents of Lincoln, local businesses, and visitors, with an enhanced market offer in the heart of the city centre’s retail area.

The project will take advantage of the direct access to City Square, helping to continue the reinvigoration of this area as an anchor destination, complementary to the Cornhill Quarter heritage-led regeneration scheme and Lincoln’s new Transport Hub.

This scheme has been developed by the City Council, its contractors and design team, with guidance and support from Historic England and Lincolnshire County Council to respond to local needs and changing customer trends. The project is a key priority for the Council in supporting the economic recovery and future vibrancy of the High Street in the wake of the Covid pandemic.

Securing Lincoln’s history for future generations

The City of Lincoln Council has secured funding to breathe new life into Lincoln High Street through The High Streets Heritage Action Zones (HSHAZ) programme. The government-funded High Streets Heritage Action Zone programme, which is being delivered by Historic England, aims to unlock the potential of high streets across England by restoring buildings, making improvements to public areas, and encouraging activities and events to breathe new life into high streets for future generations.

Lincoln Central Market has been awarded a grant of up to £919,000 from Historic England via the High Street Heritage Action Zone scheme to bring the building back to aid the restoration, reinstatement and sympathetic refurbishment of the historically significant and much loved public asset.
