Applying for an HMO License

Government regulations came into force in October 2018 that require HMOs with five or more tenants to be licensed by the council. That means if you have a property that has five or more occupants in two or more households sharing amenities, you need a licence even if your property is only one storey. Purpose built blocks of flats are excluded, but individual flats occupied by five or more people may require a licence.

Licences require basic management and safety measures to be provided.

You may also require planning permission, see https://www.lincoln.gov.uk/resident/planning/houses-in-multiple-occupation-hmos/
