Before you start 

This service covers which items should be:

  • placed in your black household waste bin
  • placed in your brown recycling bin
  • placed in your green garden waste bin
  • placed in your food waste caddy
  • taken to the nearest Household Recycling Centre (Great Northern Terrace tip)

Overview: Which bin is for what rubbish?

The black bin is for household rubbish only:
  • Every day rubbish
  • Non-recyclable items
  • Nappies and sanitary products
  • Crisp or sweet wrappers
  • Polystyrene
  • No electrical items
  • No batteries
  • No large bulky items
  • No scrap metal
The brown bin is for dry and clean recycling, that is only accepted by Lincolnshire County Council's recycling plant:
  • Clean and dry paper or card
  • Clear or light colour plastics
  • Clean glass bottles and jars
  • Metal food and drink cans
  • Plastic bottles and drink containers
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • No textiles like clothing or bedding
  • No soft toys
  • No polystyrene
  • No wood
The green bin is for garden waste only:
  • Grass cuttings
  • Leaves
  • Hedge trimmings
  • Flowers and weeds
  • Sticks smaller than 2.5cm in width
  • No soil
  • No treated wood
  • No stones or rubble

The food waste caddy is for food waste only:

  • Raw and cooked meat and fish, including bones and shells
  • Fruit and vegetables, including peelings
  • Dairy products (cheese, yoghurt)
  • Bread, cakes, and pastries
  • Rice, pasta, and beans
  • Plate scrapings and leftovers
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Loose pet food (dry or tinned)
  • Small amounts of sauces, gravy, and custard
  • Oil and fats

Take your rubbish to the tip if it cannot go in any of your bins, including:

  • Electricals
  • Scrap metal
  • Wood
  • Builders waste
  • Chemicals
  • Garden Waste
  • Large bulky items
