Fly-tipping, littering and dog fouling

Dog fouling

We take dog fouling seriously and expect all dog owners to clean up after their pets.

If you see someone not cleaning up after their dog, you can report it online.

What does this mean?

Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, it is against the law to let a dog foul and not clean it up straight away on land the public can use. This includes the commons, public spaces and car parks.

If a dog owner does not clean up after their dog in Lincoln, they may receive a fixed penalty notice. If the case goes to court, the fine can be up to £1,000.

What if it’s not my dog?

If the dog is with you or under your control, it is your responsibility to clean up after it.

What if I don’t realise my dog has fouled?

Dog owners are responsible for keeping an eye on their pets. If your dog fouls and you do not clean it up, you could be given a fixed penalty notice or taken to court.

What if I don’t have anything to clean it up with?

If you are taking your dog out, please make sure you bring something with you to clean up after it.

You can use dog waste bags, nappy bags or ordinary plastic bags.

I’ve cleaned it up — where should I put it?

There are dog waste bins across the city, and you can also use ordinary litter bins.

Please make sure the waste is wrapped securely first. If there is no bin nearby, take it home and put it in your household bin.

Signs are there as a reminder, but you still need to clean up after your dog, even if there is no sign or bin nearby.

Cleaning up after your dog helps keep the city clean, protects public health and shows responsible dog ownership.
