The Local Authority has a responsibility to deal with dangerous structures 24 hours a day 365 days a year, as they occur, under the Building Act 1984 to ensure that dangerous buildings or structures that affect public safety are made safe. This may involve dealing with dangers such as loose slates, unstable walls, broken glazing, damage from explosion and storm damage.
The dangerous structure or building has to affect ‘public safety’ we cannot intervene if a wall, for example, sits strictly between two private properties (e.g. separating your back garden from your neighbours back garden) as this is classified as a private civil matter that should be dealt with your neighbour direct or through legal channels.
- The legislation in the above Act is enforced by our Building Control team. It is therefore advised that if you think a building or structure is dangerous you should report it to the Building Control team where it will be dealt with immediately
