Downsizing Scheme

Downsizing FAQs

Do I qualify to be considered for the scheme?

If you are a secure tenant of City of Lincoln Council, with one or more spare bedrooms, you could be considered for the downsizing scheme.

What is downsizing?

Downsizing is a voluntary scheme that helps you move from your current property to a smaller property with fewer bedrooms.

What support will I get to downsize?

If you need practical help with your move, for example arranging removals, we can refer you to our tenancy support service, who will assess what assistance can be offered.

What if I have arrears or debts?

Any money owed to City of Lincoln Council is deducted from the payment. Examples include:

  • rent arrears.

  • repairs and damage you are responsible for.

  • removing items you have left in the property.

  • removing or making good unsatisfactory alterations that you have done.

The payment will be made once your move has taken place and you have handed over the keys to your old property.

Will you visit my current property?

We will carry out a home visit to complete the referral form and a property inspection as part of the process. We will need to identify any potential works that may need to be completed such as removing alterations or carrying out repairs.

What if I have a court order?

Every referral is checked on its own merit, in certain circumstances the Council may apply discretion and approve your case.

How quickly can I downsize?

We will prioritise all applications and work to identify suitable homes for applicants based on their referral form. You will be added to the management move list which means that you bypass the normal housing register.
