Transferring Grave Ownership

Grave ownership (The Exclusive Right of Burial) must be transferred via a legal process. The process we use depends on one of 4 scenarios. Information on transferring the Right of Burial can be found here, or by contacting our office directly.

Laying Ashes to Rest in the Garden of Remembrance

There is no rush when deciding how or if you wish to lay ashes to rest. Below are the options at Lincoln Crematorium. All of the options are available to you at any time, even if the ashes have already left our care.

  • Witnessed burial in the Garden of Remembrance: If your wish is for your loved one to be buried in our Garden of Remembrance, and you wish to attend, please contact our office by phone, email, or by popping in to see us at Lincoln Crematorium and we will arrange the details with you.
  • Unwitnessed burial in the Garden of Remembrance: If your wish is to lay the ashes to rest in the Garden of Remembrance, and you do not wish to attend, please contact us as above. There will be a form for you to complete, which will allow you to choose the location for the burial. For an unwitnessed burial, we normally wait 4 weeks from receiving the ashes to burial in case families decide they would like to attend.
  • Burial in a City of Lincoln Council Cemetery: If the ashes are to be laid to rest in one of our Cemeteries, please contact us as above, and we will take you through the process of applying for a formal burial. New graves are currently available for ashes burials in our Canwick, Newport and Long Leys Road Cemeteries. To help with your decision, our Garden of Remembrance is split into areas which denote years and months, starting at November 1968 and continuing through to the present day. Some choose to lay their loved ones to rest in dates that are special to them, e.g. anniversaries and birthdays, while others simply choose an area that appeals to them, such as near a tree they like. We also keep a permanent register of all witnessed and unwitnessed burials in our Garden, allowing families to reunite loved ones in the same areas if they wish to do so.
Memorials and Tributes in the Garden of Remembrance

The Garden of Remembrance is a natural area, because of this we do not allow headstones, plaques, wind chimes, plants/trees, markers or similar and request that only flowers are left, without packaging or wrapping.

Unpermitted items left in the area will be removed and placed in safe storage for 6 months ready for collection. Permanent memorials are available elsewhere in the Crematorium grounds.

For enquiries, please fill out our Memorial form here.

Flowers after a Funeral Service

Following a funeral in our Chapels, any floral tributes left will be displayed in our flower patio areas for 1 week. After that week, any remaining floral tributes will be recycled as part of our composting scheme. Please note, floral tributes that are found to be perished before the week has passed will be recycled early.
