About Independent Living

City of Lincon Council (the council) aim to support older tenants retain their independence and feel secure in their own homes. The Independent Living Service (the service) is designed to help maintain and improve their quality of life and this booklet explains a little about what the service is.

The housing needs of older tenants vary due to their age, health, mobility and aspirations. The service offers a person-centred service to ensure the needs of the individual are met. The service aims to support them to remain as independent as they can be, while respecting their dignity, right of choice, cultural and religious needs.

The service is available to tenants over the age of 60.

Independent Living housing: What do the council provide?

There are 4 choices within Independent Living housing:

  1. Independent Living housing
  2. Extra Care housing
  3. Grouped scheme housing
  4. Dispersed alarms (Lifelines)

All Independent Living tenants hold standard council tenancies and therefore, they have the same rights as any tenant in council housing. They are expected to live reasonably independent by themselves or with support from other agencies. The Independent Living team do not provide personal care or home care services but will assist in making referrals for these services to be put in place, should they be needed.

All schemes have Independent Living Coordinators working in them during the week (there is no weekend cover except for De Wint Court) who will happily support the tenants where they can.

All Independent Living accommodation is fitted with emergency alarm equipment so tenants can call for assistance. This will be answered by either the Independent Living Coordinator on site or the Lincare Control Centre when no staff are on site or the tenant lives in their own home outside of Independent Living housing. There is assistance 24/7 including bank holidays, so the tenants know they are not on their own.

All Independent Living tenants will have an Individual Support Plan, which will be kept up to date to ensure it meets their support requirements.

Some of the Independent Living schemes provide limited storage for mobility scooters, so they can be stored safely and securely. There is often a waiting list for storage space, so tenants will need to check availability before getting a mobility scooter.
